The Gites in France Blog
It’s Christmas market time in France!
It’s Christmas market time in France! From late November and the whole of December many french cities will be decked out with sparkling fairy lights, lush green fir trees and town squares full of alpine log cabins, selling a whole host of handcrafted Christmas gifts.
Here in the Loire all of the major cities are hosting a Christmas market and at Angers, we have one of the best (ranked in the top ten in France by toutelaculture.com)! Set in and around the main square, with a carousel for the little, and not so little (!) ones, spectacular lights of the grand theatre, big wheel and over 100 chalets – it’s one not to be missed.
Key start dates for 2015 Christmas markets in the Loire Valley:
- Nantes – 20 Nov
- Le Mans – 28 Nov
- Angers – 27 Nov
- Tours – 21 Nov
- Orleans – 28 Nov
On a smaller scale, but in truly magical settings, are the Christmas markets of the troglodyte villages. Set in the caves, wrap up warm as you meander through the tufa stone dwellings and peruse the delights of the local artisans. And don’t miss out on a sneaky vin chaud and a fouée or crêpe with nutella to keep you going!
We’ve just spent a great weekend at the Christmas Market at Doué-le-Fountaine – see here.
You might think of the Loire as a warm weather retreat, best saved for a relaxing summer holiday. Well, think again – it’s just magical at this time of year and it’s not just for the markets. Many of the vineyards have their ‘portes ouvertes‘ (open days) early December. What better place to pick up the Christmas bubbly than the sparkling wine houses of Saumur or Vouvray – a fraction of the price of champagne; great value and more than equal on taste!
Book yourself a gite or chambre d’hote for a short winter break in the Loire. Many have open fires and woodburners for a cosy atmosphere, snuggle up with a book and a glass of red and relax after a day experiencing Christmas shopping the french way! Use our Ask Ali feature to find cosy cottages with woodburners with availability at Christmas.
