Is this the new Prosecco? Crémant de Loire stakes a claim!

Posted on November 12, 2015 by Alison Shawcroft in Things to do

Crémant de Loire – a dry sparkling wine from the Loire Valley, made in the méthode traditionelle, the same as Champagne, but of course it can’t be called Champagne. A great (and much cheaper) alternative to Champagne and a real rival to Prosecco.

Here in the Loire you can pick up a good quality sparkling wine for £5 or less with current exchange rates. Now is a fantastic time to pop over to France to stock up for the Christmas festivities or maybe advance preparation for a celebration (wedding, birthday etc) next year.

Extra special in December are the ‘portes ouvertes’ (open days) of the sparkling wine houses, decked out for Christmas and with lots of ideas for great presents – local produce, small artisanal gifts – a welcome change from the mass produced rubbish littered in the big shops.

Here are just a few of the many Loire Valley wine houses with their portes ouvertes in December:

Ackermans

Louis de Grenelle

Veuve Amiot

Mostly located in and around Saumur, December is a great time to visit with the Christmas markets in full swing and the shops open on Sundays – ooh, la, la!

And of course you’ll need somewhere to stay, so book yourself a cosy gite or B&B, light the woodburner and relax on the comfy sofa with a glass of sparkling white, rosé or even red! Find a place to stay
