Increase Gite income in France with Themed Holidays

Looking back, my first two posts on the subject of running gites and holiday cottages in France have been a bit downbeat. That’s probably not a bad thing – too many articles make running gites sound an easy route into creating a new life in France.

If you’re supplementing a pension, then a few holiday lets will give your income a welcome boost.

If you are looking for a primary income from running holiday accommodation then you need to look at how you can increase gite income and really make your gites in France work for you.

Increase gite income in France with a Theme

It’s time to be much more positive – running holiday accommodation in France can enable you to create a pretty idyllic life, one where you are your own boss and you get the rewards for what you put in.

The challenge is as ever making enough money to give you that lifestyle – but it can be done.

Some of the Loire Gites we showcase on this site are successful because they offer themed holidays on top of their holiday cottages and gites.

You can add heaps of added value with your theme and this is where you can make your holiday cottages or gites really work for you.   Add in services like meals, rental of equipment and your own expertise – if you are an expert then add in this to your price.

These are some of the popular themes at the moment, with a few click through links thrown in so you can get an idea of what we’re on about.

Passion & Knowledge

You’ll need to have passion for your theme and some knowledge.

If you’re putting together cycling holidays, then it’s no good just running your gites and buying a couple of bikes for rent. Your guests will want to know where to go, your insights into routes, they might want help with fixing their bikes or being picked up if they get into trouble.  These are all extras you can charge for, but without a passion for cycling you’re going to find it hard to pull all this off.   After cycling all day they might want food as well – a great way to increase your income.

Same with fishing – if you’ve a lake in your grounds – what an opportunity! But those who fish seriously will be looking for a lake run by someone who knows what they know! The best ones will provide great fishing conditions, great fish (obvious), bait, places for bivies to be set up (perhaps with electricity to hand) and maybe even cooked breakfasts and other food during the fish. Again, passion is key – show as much passion as your guests and you will get returners and recommendations year after year.

Become Hard to Copy & Enjoy!

The trouble with just running gites is that great accommodation is fairly straightforward for others to copy. Creating a unique themed experience around you and your property is so much harder for others to replicate – so once you’ve got a great niche working, it will work for you for a long time – providing you’re still enthusiastic.

BIO

Moving to France in 2006 and leaving corporate life behind, we started running gites and then created a Chambre d’Hote.

Almost ten years on, the family has grown to include a daughter and while still running gites, the Chambre D’Hote specialises in welcoming cyclists from around the world.

LoireLife provides a place for others to advertise their gites in the Loire Valley, without the high commissions that larger holiday lettings websites charge.
